Sitting volleyball has grown to be one of the more popular Paralympic
sports due to the fast and exciting action. At club level, the game
offers both disabled and non-disabled players the opportunity to compete both
with and against each other. It is one of the few fully inclusive sports which
is a great leveller for all participants as everyone starts at ground level!
Plymouth Marjon Volleyball Club (PMVC) and the South West Volleyball
Association (SWVA) are both keen to raise awareness and participation levels
of Sitting Volleyball in the South West region.
Therefore, in conjunction with Active Devon, VolleySLIDE (an international
sitting volleyball initiative) and Volleyball England’s Go Spike Campaign,
we are hosting an awareness workshop designed to raise awareness of the sport
at a grass roots level whilst demonstrating the different options and
variations there are when delivering it.
The target audience for this workshop is as follows:
-
PE Teachers (or teachers interested in sport)
-
Community Sport coaches, Disability Sport coaches, Volleyball coaches
-
Interested volleyball players
-
Physiotherapists, Rehabilitation workers or any others from the medical
profession
The aim is for every attendee to leave as a ‘sitting volleyball
advocate’ so that they can spread awareness about the sport and then should
they encounter someone with a disability, they can point them towards Sitting
Volleyball and the opportunities available to them in the region.
For those that wish to deliver sitting volleyball you will also be given
the resources and knowledge required to self deliver and also how to gain
exposure via Volleyball England’s Go Spike initiative.
Format
The workshop will be a part theory, part practical delivery – with this
in mind, please ensure you are dressed comfortably and ready to get
participate – you don’t have to have had experience playing any form of
volleyball before as the practical sessions are to demonstrate play at a
beginner level.

This is the first year that the SWVA have run a Player of the Match award
and after the first few rounds of the league, a couple of players have taken
an early lead.
It’s very early days but you can keep up todate with the POM nominations
via the SWVA League tables or direct at: http://www.swva.volleyballmatches.co.uk/pom.asp
Teams are asked to award the POM to the player who, in the opinion of the
opposition team, has made the most positive contribution to the match:
- Personal playing performance
- Consistent display of technical and tactical ability
- Contribution to the team’s performance
- Support of team mates.
- Adherence to the rules of the game
- The spirit of fair play.
- Acceptance of the referees’ decisions.
In preparation for the forth coming national junior cups, the academy of beach
sports under 16 girls team headed to Austria for the feldkirch sparkassse
invitational cup 2013. In a combined team to strengthen the age of the team
the Academy linked in with three Plymouth Junior players.
The First match was a very tough draw against the 2012 tournament winners
Modena from Italy. The Italian team started strong and over powered the
academy girls who by the end of the match had settled into playing against a
quick attacking and good defensive team but found their form too late.
The Italians with many players returning from last year were a more
experienced team and able to win points fighting back from pressure plays
constantly.
In their pool of four teams the Academy won their next two matches beating
the two Austrian teams from Feldkirch and Nuziders. Despite having won two
matches convincingly in their pool of 4, with 12 teams competing the academy
missed out a semi- final play off place by 1 point. Instead the academy
had to settle for the fifth to eight playoff on the Sunday.
They had a promising start beating the much stronger German team by two
sets to nil with their typical defensive ability. The team appeared to have
found their feet and settled into their best play of the competition.
There were some amazing strong attacks set up by Sophie watts and Vicky
Wilkins for the consistent kills from Ellie Cranch and Anaya Evans. Both
attackers showed a level of intelligent play by varying their hitting and
seeking out the holes in the German defence. Playing to their strengths Meg
Leeds and Helen Farr covered the court defensively and Rachel Fallow managed
to block and knock the confidence of the powerful German hitters.
In the final 5th/6th play-off position the opponents were Team VVV from
Austria. A very organised and business like team with no obvious weaknesses.
Neck and neck all the way through the first set the academy performed to their
beat potential losing out 23-25 in a close fought-could go anyway- first set.
Uncharacteristically deflated by just losing the local club never picked up
their game and lost the second set 25-12.
Denise Austin Head coach explains, “It was our first international indoor
experience for all the athletes in our club. Travelling together so far,
facing new challenges and different opposition, looking at a variety of styles
of volleyball has inspired the girls in their ambitions and individual
performances. The better European girls have a swagger and confidence that
only will come with time; we are a young club but want to give a valuable
experience through our sport to its players. It will not be obvious to start
with but when going back into training and when we step on court for our first
round of the cup, the team will have improved as they process and assimilate
their experiences into confidence and experience on the court”. An
exciting indoor season is about to start!

Dear coaches in the South West,
Perhaps there are clubs near/ around the Bristol area that are free to help
run a taster session at the Community Games organised by the National Trust at
Leigh Woods and Tyntesfield in Bristol.
Volleyball England have been asked by the National trust to source a
club/coach who would be willing to run a ‘come and try’ session during the
Games, with the opportunity to promote their club as well during the Games.
The site currently has an outdoor net that can be used during the Games.
If you or a club member would be able to help source a club/coach who would
be willing to assist during the Games, then please contact Sam Harding s.harding@volleyballengland.org
at the Volleyball England office.
Good luck to all in their volleyball season
Regards
Jurek
