Killerton House “Come and Try It”
Most of you will be aware that the National Trust would like
us to make more use of their properties for events and tournaments (see news/national-trust-properties
).
This week I had the opportunity to run a public “Come and Try It”
volleyball session at Killerton House near Exeter and hence see how this
may work. As well as the NT event managers, Sport England’s
Relationship Manager Simon Ridd also dropped in to see how it was
going. We had one issue with the venue, if you would like a copy of my
report, please email me.
The Torexe juniors took up the challenge to help run and staff the
event, which did not start to well due to the weather. A lot of gazebo
time for the morning session due to the rain but after a free cream tea
lunch, the sun finally came out. |
|
|
We put up three nets at ladies and junior heights plus a
number of banners. Not too many customers, mostly under 10′s and a
hand full of adults joined in.
Volleyball England has agreed to provide a free net for the remainder
of the summer, this will be put up later this week and will be available
for anyone to use. Free public access is available to this area, just
sign the attendance sheet in the sports equipment box next to the court. |
Grants for NEW Teams
In a recent email to associations, Ian Poynton, VE Membership and
Funding Officer is reminding everyone that if you have a new team in the
South West League, National League or similar, then don’t forget to
apply for a Sport England funding. |
|
“If a club or team is new then a Small Grant will pay for facility hire
for the first year. They will also pay for anything else that is new i.e. kits
for a new team, extra balls.
If it was an NVL club they would even pay for transport to away games!
So what we can do is apply to the Small Grants funding is between £300-£10,000
and I can help you to fill the application form in – items we could apply
for include;
1) New posts and nets. Small Grants won’t fund fixed costs so we would
have to do one of two options here 1) the school pays for the drilling of the
holes in the floor, or the club 2) we “integrate” the costs into the
application – but the installation doesn’t show on the quote
2) We could apply for new equipment, extra balls etc.
3) Coaching Qualification/s
4) Facility hire – Sport England could pay for facility hire for the
first year of the new team!
Here is the link to the Small Grants web page http://www.sportengland.org/funding/our-different-funds/small-grants/
If you could get started by creating an account. To do so click on the
apply now button. Once done I will then fill in the application form for you!
If you could give me a brief description of the new team, when they will
train and play games that would be really helpful.”
If you need anymore details about Sport England funding options, see the
SWVA web site for details (search: Funding) or give Ian a call 01509 227711, i.poynton@volleyballengland.org

SW Champs Donations
|
Following the SW Championships this year, we had the usual collection
of forgotten and left behind clothes. A number of these were claimed but everything
else has now been donated to the British Heard Foundation.
Also many thanks to the person who left an un-opened 1.25 Lt Copella
Orange drink container under the team bench on court 1. Just what the worn
out events managers needed after two days of competitions.

PMVC renamed as Plymouth Mayflower Volleyball Club and
announce New Junior Development section
|
Plymouth’s most successful volleyball club in recent years, Plymouth
Marjon Volleyball Club, has announced that it has undergone a change in
name as well as announcing a new junior development program for the
forthcoming season.
As agreed at their AGM, from 1st August 2014 they will be formally
known as Plymouth Mayflower Volleyball Club and have moved the hub of
their activity from UCP Marjon to Plymstock School. |
Club Founder, Andrew Potter, stated some of the reasons behind the change:
“PMVC has grown exponentially over the years and in many ways such as:
- Our membership (50 members were registered in 2013/14 season),
- Our range of delivery (Indoor, Outdoor, Beach and Sitting programmes and
5 teams were entered into regional competitions)
- and our reputation (our committee is often approached by Councils and
Sports partnerships and individual schools to host or run volleyball
competitions and events).
Our committee have recognised the need to facilitate that growth for the
forthcoming seasons”
“When we started the club in 2009, participation in volleyball was in
decline. Our aim was to put volleyball back on the map whilst also making
grass-roots volleyball available to the Plymouth community again. We feel we
have been successful in that aim but it is now time for the next chapter in
that journey.”
“Our new name “Mayflower” was chosen in respect of our city’s
maritime roots and also to Plymouth’s volleyball roots as the Mayflower
Centre (now Life Centre) was host to a lot of volleyball activity in the 80s
and 90’s.”

Volleyball at the Commonwealth Games – Unlikely
GOLDOC Chairman, Nigel Chamier OAM, confirmed there were no changes to the
sports detailed in the Gold Coast Candidate City File submitted to the
Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
Beach Volleyball will not be included on the programme for
the 2018 Commonwealth Games following a decision by the Gold Coast 2018
Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC). The Corporation reaffirmed that no
additional sports would be proposed for the 2018 Commonwealth Games sports
programme that comprises 10 core sports (including para-sports) and an
additional seven optional sports, capping the number at 17.
“The sports programme was carefully developed to provide a balance of
sports with consideration given to potential athlete participation levels, the
number of Commonwealth nations hosting international tournaments and
participant numbers from the Commonwealth at world championships” said
GOLDOC Chairman, Nigel Mr Chamier OAM. “We are confident that the sports
featured in our event will have international appeal and attract the very best
athletes,” he said.
