Hi all,

More volleyball news, well done to all SWVA players at this years Sainsbury's School Games with England and Wales.

SW Vets Tournament Entry

final_match_web

Although the name of the event is the SW Vet’s Tournament, it’s more than that, with two thirds of the entries being from mixed teams. The competition uses a handicap system based not just on age but also with additional points for each female on court at the start of the match, encouraging a true mixed tournament. Teams then have to either hold on to their point’s advantage or catch the other team up within the allotted match period of seventeen minutes.

It’s a format that produces an excellent match environment and very entertaining volleyball for players and spectators alike and has produced a different event winner each year.

SUNDAY 9th NOVEMBER 2014
This years event is once again being held at the Riverside Leisure Centre, Exeter, EX4 1AF on Sunday 9th November 2014 between 10.00 am and 6.00 pm. (approx.). The age qualification is 35 i.e. players may only take part if they are 35 or over on the day of the tournament.

This is intended to be a social tournament and a chance for some of our former players to play again and meet old friends. Individuals, who do not have a team to play for, please enter your name and playing standard and I will do my best to pull teams and players together. As this is a tournament in which Men’s and Mixed teams will be playing against each other, teams will be given a handicap.

The cost of entry to the tournament will be £60 per team. The form below should be returned by 1st   October 2014 to the SW Competitions Secretary:

You can enter using the link http://www.swva.org.uk/junior-grand-prix-entry-form and the cost of entering is £15 per team. Teams are generally made up with three players, but two can play together or you can have a team of four where players rotate in. It is also allowed to include one younger boy in a girls team or one girl up to one year older in a boys team. The weight of balls should be appropriate to the age group playing and the team with the youngest player will always select the weight of the lightweight balls if there is a dispute.

I would like to make the closing date for entries Friday 26th at 6 p.m. All players must be registered to take part in the Junior Grand Prix. Over £300,000 of new external funding

Over £300,000 of new external funding

Volleyball England staff and volunteers helped secure over £329,000 extra funding from external sources. Read more:

August marked the first full year of the new Sport England funded Whole Sport Plan for volleyball. This anniversary coincided with a substantial milestone for our sport in England – over £300,000 of new external funds brought into the sport!

In the 12 months up to 26 August 2014, £329,544 of external grant funding was secured for Volleyball England affiliated organisations and national programmes due to the tremendous work of our volunteer network, Volleyball Relationship Managers and National Office staff. These funds were secured from sources and programmes such as Sportivate, Sport England Small Grants, Inspired Facilities and Capital Grants.

The success rate of grant applications to the Sport England Small Grants programmes from Volleyball England staff is currently running at an astonishing 100% – almost double the 55% average success rate of grant applications to Sport England across all bids by all sports. It is testament to the dedication of Volleyball Relationship Managers and National Office staff in not only working closely with clubs, colleges and other volleyball organisations on the bid documents but also their successful collaboration with funding bodies and expert knowledge of the required processes.

Beyond the £329,000 already secured, decisions on more than £200,000 in grant applications are due in the next few months. In addition, the Volleyball England Talent team have secured over £500,000 financial support for our talented young players in the Junior and Senior Academies via theAdvanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence(AASE) and Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) programmes.

If your affiliated club, school, college, university, area or regional association is considering submitting an external funding application, please contact the Volleyball England National Office for expert guidance and support. Call 01509 227722 or email Ian Poynton at i.poynton@volleyballengland.org.

Volleyball Magazine

Volleyball Magazine have a couple of interesting free items on their web site this month:

Preserve Your ACL & Accelerate Performance

prevent acl injuries

To produce players who stop balls from dropping on defense, jump out of the gym on offense, and stay injury-free throughout the season, a volleyball training system must contain elements for both athletic performance and injury prevention. Performance training for volleyball players should include vertical-jump development, foot-quickness exercises, and lateral movement. Injury prevention should cover several areas that commonly cause problems, but the most noted issue for female athletes is ACL injuries. ACL-protective training includes correcting quadriceps-to-hamstring strength ratios, teaching force absorption, grooving neural patterns that correct valgus knee (the caving in of the knees when squatting, jumping, and landing), and developing strong postural lines so the shoulders stay over the hips.

Solving the Split Block Dilemma

split block

When my partner and I are split-blocking, how do we decide who will block during the play?

Lauren Fendrick: Typically within a match one blocker/defender combination will be more effective against a particular opponent. If that is the case, then you should decide beforehand to use your more effective defense as much as possible. You can also decide during the play, but as with most things in beach volleyball, communication is key. You can also have set rules, like always have the attacker stay at the net and block and the setter retreat to defense. Or you can consider tendencies. If your team is pulling a lot and the attacker tends to hit toward the puller, you can put your better transition-attacker at the net in hopes of getting a chance to pull, get a dig, and smash down a transition set.
