Time for the July Newsletter and just a reminder that the closing date for
the 2014/15 SWVA League is fast approaching (12th July).
We have also agreed to make a couple of changes to the 2014-15 SWVA player registration process with the introducing of the SWVA
“Team Sheets”. We have always required teams to enter their player registrations on the score sheets, however the FIVB have now removed the player registration box from their latest set of score
sheets, hence the introduction of the Team Sheet. SW League teams have already
been sent details, you can read more about it at: http://www.swva.org.uk/news/2014-15-swva-player-registrations
SW stars represent England at ASVO Beach Trophy
The Academy of Beach Sports added to their beach volleyball
international reputation as three of their athletes competed in the ASVO Beach
Trophy in Austria. Anaya Evans, Sam Dunbavin and Ellie Cranch, also of PMVC,
along with Joel Roberts of Wessex, represented England in the U20 competition
against nations such as Italy, Germany and Brazil. Denise Austin, Head coach
of the Girls Junior Beach Volleyball Programme entered the two teams in order
for them to experience a high level of volleyball at an international
tournament.
Cranch and Evans played some exceptional volleyball. The two girls, who are
in school years 10 and 11 were playing against girls 4 years their senior.
This, however, did not intimidate them and their aggressive serving and dogged
defence made them a hard opponent to beat. Their weekend highlight was a 2-0
victory over the Brazilian representatives. Brazil are arguably the best beach
volleyball nation and so this victory against a team who competed that the U19
Brazilian National Championships shows the quality of play the girls produced.
The girls finished in 6th place out of the 8 teams in the tournament.
This tournament was Dunbavin and Roberts first international tournament
together. They were drawn in a very difficult pool with other well established
pairs. Both boys dealt with the pressure and intensity of the volleyball well.
They served well and placed some exquisite attacking shots amongst the power
spikes they both strike so naturally. They defended well against a barrage of
attacks and pushed several teams close in their tightly contested games. The
boys finished 8th and will be able to take this experience with them as they
look to continue to develop as athletes.
Many thanks go to Mike Evans who was team manager for both of the teams
whilst in Austria.

South
West Junior Girls prepare to take to the beach
Following
the Junior Women’s Beach Volleyball National Team trials & Selection
camp that were held in May, Yasmin Kaashoek (left) and Anaya Evans (right)
have been selected to represent England at the European qualifier event for
the Inaugural FIVB World U17 Championships. The qualifier event is due to
take place in Matosinhos, Portugal on June 6th -8th with the squad flying
out this Thursday (5th June)This year is the first year that the FIVB U17
world championships is taking place, with FIVB having added more age group
events to the beach volleyball calendar.
The
competition itself is being held in Mexico, but with high numbers of nations
registrating from Europe the girls will first need to compete in a European
qualifying event. Yasmin (aged 15) and Anaya (aged 15) are representing one
of the 16 countries registered, Anaya and Yasmin will be looking to secure a
top 6 place in Portugal to ensure qualification to the main draw in Mexico,
or to be placed in positions 7 to 11 to secure a place in the pre
competition qualification rounds where they can again compete for one of the
remaining qualifier spots in the main draw for the U17 World Championships.
Preparations
have been going well with a 4 day beach training camp recently held in
Croyde, where Anaya commented “We are super excited to be going and hope
to do England proud. Having great coaches and support has got us this far
and we want to push to the next level – Portugal is our opportunity for
this”

Anaya
alongside Yasmin Kaashoek of Devizes and LeAF competed in the 16 team event
for the right to qualify for the World Champs in Mexico mid July.
Drawn
into a pool with Czech Republic, Poland and Turkey they took the eventual
winners Czech to 21-18, 21-19 and also took a set off the power house of
Poland. They beat Turkey in a closely fought match 2-0 and progressed in the
knockout stages. Meaning they could finish no lower than 12th, however only 11
teams would go to Mexico.
In
the elimination stages, they had a 2-0 loss to France meaning they were
fighting for 9-12th place. but rebounded back and took a three set 2-1 win
against Spain meaning they could finish no lower then 10th. They lost to
Greece 2-0 but are able to take many positives moving forward into the next
round in Acapulco Mexico.
They
will have to secure funding to support the trip so if you would like to help

My IRC Experience – Krzysztof Ozarski
Following the Inter Regional Championships, we asked three are our
representatives about their experience. First up: Krzysztof Ozarski
My name is Krzysztof Ozarski, recently I have attended the inter regional
championships after obtaining some funding. I represented the South West
England U17 squad and despite still having one more year in this age group, I
was the starting player, playing opposite throughout the whole tournament
expect for the last game where I have played outside.
No: 10 Krzysztof (far left)
After quite an intense and tiring first day,
where we lost 2 games and 1, we had a crucial game in the morning that would
decide whether we would get into the semi finals, which we comfortably won.
In the semi finals we faced London, who we lost
to 2:0, with both sets being very intense. We then lost the battle for the
third place, playing out the 2nd squad for the entire game. The entire squad
showed a huge potential to improve for next year, and I hope to represent the
South West U17 Squad next season.

School Games – University of Bath
Congratulations to all the teams that took part in the School Games
Volleyball Competition (2nd July). There were 4 girls teams and 5 boys teams.
The teams were of varying standards, though all showed improvement by the end
of the competition. It was good to see schools returning for the second /
third year and to see particular improvement in those teams.

Results
from the coaching survey
Many
thanks for completing our coaching survey earlier this year that provided us
with a review of coaches and coaching across all sports. We also had 140
replies from volleyball coaches and this has enabled us to provide specific
data for volleyball which is attached. This has been sent to Volleyball
England who were very interested in the results.Volleyball
England have asked us to thank you on their behalf for taking part in the
survey.

Switzerland
and England to determine winner in Bournemouth
Following
on from an exciting morning of beach volleyball from the women, the guy took
to the sand court in Bournemouth for their semifinal match-ups in Pool D of
the first round of the 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup. The
national teams of Switzerland and England secured their spots in Sunday’s
final with straight wins against Ireland and Slovakia, respectively. The
latter will take on each other to determine which of them will finish last in
the standings and which will have a go at the second place against the loser
of the Switzerland vs. England match-up.
Switzerland
2, Ireland 0
The
Swiss men made their way onto court with Sebastian Chevallier / Alexei
Strasser taking on the Irish pair of Oisin McArdle / Wil Oshoke. The
Swiss dominated from the start as the Irish, like their female counterparts,
failed to make any inroads, losing by 0:2 (12-21, 12-21). The Irish team
faired slightly better as Tim Church / Robert Brennan made Mats Kovatsch /
Jonas Kissling work for their victory. After a relatively
straightforward first set for the Swiss, the pair from Ireland found another
gear and managed to stay in the game through to 14 all. A maiden set
victory was not to be though as the Swiss pushed on to win the set and match
by 2:0 (21-13, 21-17).
Jake
Sheaf / Chris Gregory were first on for England, looking to give the men’s
team the advantage in the tie. They raced into a 5-0 lead and never
looked back, winning the match comfortably by 2:0 (21-9, 21-6) in 26 minutes
against the relatively inexperienced Slovakian pair of Jan Vasek / Marian
Lukac. Gregg Weaver / Philip Smith went through the next match swiftly
and produced much of the same. Smith was using his superior height at
the net as Jakub Ihnat / Marek Meciar struggled to find any answers to his
blocking. It was a routine victory in the end in a match that only
lasted 29 minutes – 2:0 (21-11, 21-10).
