Wessex signs GB Men’s Captain

Wessex Volleyball is delighted to announce the signing of GB Men’s captain, Ben Pipes. He joins the Club straight after playing in the European Championships which followed the Olympic’s. This is another real coup for the Club as it seeks to re establish itself at the forefront of the Men’s game.

Aside from the volleyball, Ben is going to be part of the learning support staff at the new Leaf Academy at Oakmead School. He says that his“main drive is to be there from the beginning to pour my experiences into the melting pot and to help forge Leaf into the best elite sports academy in the UK.”

Volleybal- wise, he will be a fantastic addition to the Wessex Leaf squad that new coach Vangelis is building up. 6ft 8 tall and still only 25, Ben has over 100 caps. He started volleyball in Hull and made his GB debut in 2006 against Australia. He has played professionally in Spain, Sweden, Belgium and Holland. His ability and experience will be a huge asset as the team looks to build on their 3-2 win against Birmingham at the weekend.

Ben will be playing in his first match for Wessex on Saturday when they entertain Danes from Watford.  The match is at Leaf Campus, Oakmead School, Duck Lane.  Warm up at 4 with match start at 4.30.  Spectators are welcome and Ben will probably be available after the game to sign autographs.

It is a tremendously exciting time for Wessex and volleyball in this area. Not only will Ben be playing but he is also taking over the coaching of the Wessex Under 15 boys team. If any boys want be part of these squads that train on Mondays and Thursdays they should contact Wessex at wessex4vb@btinternet.com or phone 01202 740021.
