Player of the Match Poll

Although many league programs around the country have a “Player of the Match” award, we do not have one in the SWVA League. It has been suggested that we add a Ladies and Men’s “Player of the Match” award to the 2013/14 SW league program.

It is anticipated that it will be similar to the National league “Player of the Match” award, where each team will nominate a member of the opposing team and record this on the scoresheet. Let us know what you think, only two clubs have voted so far, details at: Player_of_the_Match_poll

Level Two Coaching Course

We are looking to run a Level Two Coaching course at the beginning of the 2013/14 indoor season. With the change to the new UKCC qualification, there has ot been a level two course for a while, tutors are currently going through the new process and exam structure, this should be completed by mid summer and hence we are looking to be one of the first regions to host a UKCC Level 2 course.

If you are not aware, the Level 2 is the minimal qualification required to run a coaching session and courses do not come around that often.

The course will be held over two weekends, our provisional dates are Sept 21/22 & Oct 19/20.

The course fees will be £420 or £450. Funding is available for coach development, a ‘Funding Opportunities Guide for Coaches’ has been developed by ScUK and is available on the SWVA & VE web sites. Local associations and clubs also give development grants to their coaches and hence it is not uncommon for participants to recover 50% to 60% of this fee either direct or in future paid work (you have plenty of time to apply).

UKCC Level two courses can also be run by third party companies e.g. University partnerships with an appropriate course fee mark up. These groups are currently unable to run courses until qualified tutors become available later this year. As well as being the cheapest, this may well be the only place you can do a Level 2 course in 2013.

What do I do Next…………

If interested, YOU MUST REGISTER YOUR INTEREST on the Volleyball England web site, page:

http://www.volleyballengland.org/getintovolleyball/coaching/courses/course_enquiry

Please note that one of the question is with reference to “How far will you travel (miles)”. We need a minimum of 12 people before we can run the course, not an issue if we have a good number of people register from the SW & S. Wales area. If not then we may have to locate the course towards the North or North East of our region, in order to attract coaches from neighboring regions.

Young Official Development Grants Available

The SWVA has received funds of £450 to support the running and deliver of the Young Referee Awards. If you would like to apply for part or all of the funds then please let us know how you would like to use the money. Details at young-official

Go Spike 18 Month Review

Go Spike 18 Month Review

Since the launch of Volleyball England’s Go Spike campaign in July 2011 the number of opportunities to play volleyball in England has increased significantly, helping over 36,000 people get into volleyball and over 5,000 people playing regularly.

The Go Spike campaign has developed a number of initiatives which have helped to raise the profile of the sport and encourage adult participation in volleyball. The promotion of open club sessions, new beach facilities, Come & Try taster sessions, University recreational sessions and promoting volleyball at external events have all proved successful in getting more people to play volleyball. Click on the box below to view the full report:

Open publication - Free publishing - More fun

All of this activity has been promoted via the Go Spike website – www.gospike.net and social media outlets. Since July 2011 the website has had over 26,000 unique visits and has experienced notable peaks during London 2012, and following coverage on Mike Bushell’s BBC Breakfast programme. Most recently the ‘Stay Inspired’ newsletter sent by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games has also had a big impact on website visits.

Clubs are also starting to feel the benefits of Go Spike. Since the launch of ‘come & try’ sessions direct support has been given to clubs to run six week taster sessions designed to encourage new participants to stay actively involved with the club thereafter. Hermitage Volleyball Club in Leicestershire almost doubled their membership as a result of this support.

Go Spike’s six week taster sessions have also proved successful in Leisure Centres in Greater Manchester, benefiting from the high demand to play volleyball in the area. A number of new sessions have emerged across the county starting out as a six week taster session and developing as regular activity after the sixth week.

Lisa Wainwright, Chief Executive at Volleyball England said: “Over the last 18 months the Go Spike campaign has been able to create new opportunities to encourage people into volleyball by removing barriers that may have prevented them from doing so in the past. This has included pay to play sessions, the development of free to use beach volleyball courts in public places and a Go Spike Mikasa ball that is suitable for beginners.

“The support of our volunteers, clubs and links to external partners have been an invaluable asset in making the campaign a success. We will continue to work with partners to create opportunities for new people to get into volleyball and will use the information received from data capturing to make sure we target the right people in the right places.”
