Time for a July update...

Entries for this years SW League have now closed, quite a few new teams in the ladies league this year, men down a bit on last years numbers.

We have some CEV equipment available, see below

Level Two Coaching, don't forget that if you or your club are planning to run or host any volleyball this year, a level two qualification is the minimum required if you wish to qualify for insurance via Volleyball England.

Regards

Dave Reece

Level Two Coaching Course

We are looking to run a Level Two Coaching course at the beginning of the 2013/14 indoor season. With the change to the new UKCC qualification, there has not been a level two course for a while, tutors are currently going through the new process and exam structure, this should be completed by mid summer and hence we are looking to be one of the first regions to host a UKCC Level 2 course.

If you are not aware, the Level 2 is the minimal qualification required to run a coaching session and courses do not come around that often.

The course will be held over two weekends, our provisional dates are Sept 21/22 & Oct 19/20.

The course fees will be £420 or £450. Funding is available for coach development, a ‘Funding Opportunities Guide for Coaches’ has been developed by ScUK and is available on the SWVA & VE web sites. Local associations and clubs also give development grants to their coaches and hence it is not uncommon for participants to recover 50% to 60% of this fee either direct or in future paid work.

This website has been produced to provide you with all the information you require to make our tournament fun, and your time with us – enjoyable & relaxing.

Registered through Volleyball England ( click here ), the Salisbury Volleyball Tournament is becoming very popular. We believe we are the only outdoor tournament to offer a 2 vs 2 competition on the same weekend as the main 6′s competition – outdoor music whilst you are playing and also the only people to gather all players together (after briefing) for a special warm up by staff from the local gym!

Weston-super-Mare VEBT Results

Weston-super-Mare VEBT Results

The Volleyball England Beach Tour was back on the road this week as a sun drenched Weston-super-Mare welcomed the VEBT back for a second year. The setting was perfect as a mix of new and familiar faces descended on the busy south west coast.

Top seeds Mark Garcia-Kidd and Carl Butcher were on court relativel early, making light work of newcomers to the tour this year Rodriguez/Barrios Aquino although the losing pair had just come through a tough three setter in the first round. Fellow newcomers Janer Perez/Pavon Ponce were unlucky not to make it further in the contender’s bracket, losing out to the experienced pair of Bobus/Gartshore 15-12 in the third. The semi-final line up saw Garcia-Kidd/Butcher edge a three set thriller, 18-16 in the third. Not to be out-done, Sheaf/Lasocki won their semi 15-13, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats throughout. The final was a show case of speed, agility, power and athleticism as both pairs chased down every ball. Garcia-Kidd/Butcher, appearing in their first tour final, were unlucky not to sneak a win having led in the third. Sheaf/Lasocki fought back, edging ahead and sealing the win 15-13.

Jake Sheaf, Beach Volleyball Advisory Group player representative and Weston-super-Mare 2013 winner, said “After being crowned champions at Weston last year, I was determined to defend my crown. My normal team mate Chris Gregory was absent due to injury but Tomek was a great replacement. It was a tough couple of days in the heat but we managed to battle through and take home the title against some tough opposition. Big thanks to Volleyball England, the supporters, volunteers, players and especially the council who put in a lot of hard work to make this a great event”.

In the women’s draw, former professional indoor player Vicky Palmer teamed up with Skegness runner-up Laura Plonka. They were pushed all the way in their first match against Bednarova/Rogat, narrowly missing out on what would have been a huge upset. Top seeds Ferretti/Mierture were surprise losers in the fourth round, going down in three sets to Seyfert/Orszaghova 15-12 in the third. They had another shot at making the semi finals via the contender’s bracket, but Bednarova/Rogat had other ideas as they despatched the top seeds in straight sets 21-19, 21-19. This gave them the chance to have another crack at Palmer/Plonka the following day, however Palmer/Plonka once again proved too strong and they won in 2 sets. They faced Grimson/Dyakiewicz in the final, another of the stronger pairs on the tour. It looked to be all over at 20-15 in the second set, but a run of 5 straight points from Grimson/Dyakiewicz brought the scores level. Palmer/lonka regained composure though, and took the next two points to take the 2013 Weston-super-Mare title.

Thank you to all the players, staff, volunteers and officials for supporting the event, and to North Somerset council for all their hard work in building the site to such a high standard.

Sandbanks CEV Beach Volleyball Festival

Sandbanks CEV Beach Volleyball Festival

A fantastic weekend of beach volleyball saw the Sandbanks CEV Beach Volleyball Festival & Junior Volleyball England Beach Tour host 210 teams over three days. Teams from all over England and Europe made the journey to Sandbanks Beach in Poole, notably 10 junior teams from Landstede Volleyball in Zwolle, Holland.; the tournament is fast becoming their favourite event on the summer beach tour calendar.

48 teams competed in the South-West Schools Championships (organised by Denise Austin) on Friday whilst the remaining tournament infrastructure was being set up. By Saturday morning the sky was blue with no breeze and rising temperatures. Following a group warm up by Fitness First which filled the promenade with players, volunteers and even some passers by joining in the fun, play kicked off at 9.30am with players of all ages showing off their growing talent and excellent skills on court. Fantastic performances by the young athletes continued throughout the weekend attracting lots interest from the general public who stayed to watch and find out more about the sport.

Breaks in play on centre court were filled with games aimed at getting people involved in the sport. Serving the ball in the bucket and having a rally with a giant beach ball proved to be the most popular. The tournament was also visited by three local Olympians, Dan Hunter (Team GB Men), Lucy Wicks (Team GB Women) and Ben Pipes (Team GB Men’s Captain) who were on hand to answer questions, sign autographs and have photographs with many young budding Olympians.

With brilliant sunshine all weekend and temperatures of up to 28 degrees, players and volunteers were very grateful to Fitness First and ASDA for their donations of bottled water, and also Boots for providing a full range of much needed sun cream. Another special thank you goes out to Sportset who provided all of the junior prizes and to Volleyball England for their support of the event.

Chairman of Wessex Volleyball Club, Geoff Allen said “When the weather is so good, everyone enjoys their beach volleyball. But there is a lot of planning and hard work that goes into making an event like Sandbanks run smoothly and a massive thank you is due to the group of Wessex parents who give their time so freely.  We were honoured that the CEV chose to support Sandbanks this year. Hopefully, this will show them that such support can bring great results.”

Exmouth Beach 4′s Results

Plenty of all day action and perfect weather for this years Exmouth Beach 4′s tournament, blue sky, high 20′s temperature (or was that low 30’s), no wind and too hot hot to walk on sand.

Unfortunately a much smaller event this year due to sand erosion on the beach but thanks to some sand dune bashing by the local council we were able to hold the event while the tide was out.

Also making it’s first outing since the Men’s Olympic Gold Medal match at Horse Guards last August, the Olympic beach centre court net and associated banners, a photo opportunity for all.

First: Fat Bottomed Girls

This years women’s title went to the local Exmouth Beach VC team of Fat Bottomed Girls, beating Four Non Blonds from Bristol in the final.

Second: Four Non Blonds

In the men’s event, it was Sandy Balls from Bristol taking this years title over UVGOT2BJOKING

Perranporth Results

Perranport award

Results and report on the Charity pairs.
A good crowd with high winds, what else you ask when at Perranporth, but despite the conditions some high class VB was seen and remarked on by the locals.

The Sunday was a rain affected day with 4 teams only taking part Yeovil 1 and 2 Countrymen and the mad lot from Dudley with their air plastic guitars. Wet I don’t ever remember in all my years of running Countrymen’s beach VB being so wet.

The final was played out between Yeovil 1 and 2 Guess who one. My personnel thanks to Yeovil for making at least a VB Match
