Lots of action throughout our region, time for a November update.
SW League Update
After this weekends round of matches we have two unbeaten teams in the Men’s
division, Kernow and Lydney Lynx and Plymouth Marjon and Academy of Beach
Sports in the Ladies division.
You can check out all the results on the web site.
In the Player of the Match competition, Billy Ewings, Tim Latcham, Jayne
Jones, Lucy Walton and Millie Constable are currently heading the nominations
list.
Academy of Beach Sports Qualifies for the Final
8′s
The Academy of Beach Sports has made history in its short life by qualifying
for the finals eights of the Volleyball England Under 18 Cup. “We have never
before got beyond the second round this is a landmark achievement as it has
taken five years to get to this point. Having Millie Constable, Anaya Evans
and Ellie Cranch gain international experiences this year has meant that the
standard of play of the individuals has risen but so has their expectations of
themselves. Most of our players have been taking themselves off to SW and and
South training to gain more exposure to higher levels of competition and it is
starting to show.
We are growing as a club which is a beach volleyball academy and therefore
extending our player network, Plymouth Marjons has juniors playing but not
enough to form an indoor team, Steve Allen the head coach and I have started
to look at how we create teams that pull more of our players together to enter
more teams into the cup next year”
The Final eights takes place at the Volleyball England National Centre in
Kettering on Sunday 15th December. To reach the final eights they played
Ashcombe Dorking VBC who won the Under 18′s last year 2-0 (25-17,
26-24), Team Southampton 2-1, ( 23-25, 25-19, 15-11) and then narrowly lost to
LeAF/Wessex from Bournemouth- the One of VE National Academies 1-2
(25-22,15-25, 13-15)
“What was so impressive was their nerve, we have worked hard on the
mental side of the game this year, maintaining technical focus when the
pressure is on to remove the pressure and focus on the important things, being
able to be merciless at the right time and put the opponents on the back foot,
at this level anything can happen but if you come out fighting and don’t
give up until the end then you never know when the game will take a twist in
your favour, the set scores show they held their nerve to win at crucial
times”

Equipment Funding
In order to create a world-class community sports structure we need to
invest in sport at every level and that is why we fund hundreds of different
projects every year.
Whether you are a village club who needs to purchase extra equipment or a
multi-million pound facility that hosts Olympic athletes, we have a funding
stream that can help you.
http://www.sportengland.org/funding/
I recently attended on behalf of the SWVA a Sport England presentation on
the government and National Lottery backed funding opportunities via Sport
England. As the web site states, their are various funding opportunities
available, of particular interest to us is the “Small Grants” fund for
equipment. This is open so you can apply all year around and could be used for
items like ref stands, volleyball posts, fixings, beach net systems, fixed
training net systems etc.
Small Grants uses Lottery funding to make awards of between £300 and £10,000
to not-for-profit organisations to help more people play sport.
- Applications must be for between £300 and £10,000 and total project
costs must not exceed £50,000.
- Projects must be deliverable in a 12 month period from the date of our
award letter.
- Projects must be focused on sports that are recognised by Sport England.
Please note that for sports that Sport England deem higher risk,
appropriate affiliation to the National Governing Body will be required.
Please call 08458 508 508 if you are unsure whether your sport fits this
criterion.
- Your project must be delivered to beneficiaries based in England.
- Your project start date must be at least 10 weeks after submission of
your completed application and supporting documents.
- Your project must be for new activity and new costs associated with
helping more people play sport.
If however you are looking to build a inland Beach Volleyball court, in a
park or a school area, then you should check out the “Protecting Playing
Fields” fund. A fund set up to allow sports to purchase or to develop
existing sport fields in partnership with others for the benefit of the area (£10K
to £50K).
This category is currently closed but another round of funding will be made
available early in 2014, so start planning your venture if you would like to
apply.
Checkout the FAQ for more info, email or call them on 08458 508 508.
Note, 80% of all applications are rejected because they are not complete,
check the T&C’s and make sure your application meets the requirements,
if you need help, call them.

SW Vets Results
It was another sell-out event for the regions leading mixed team event,
although the name of the event is the SW Vet’s Tournament, it’s more than
that, with two thirds of the entries being from mixed teams. The competition
uses a handicap system based not just on age but also with additional points
for each female on court at the start of the match, encouraging a true mixed
tournament. Teams then have to either hold on to their point’s advantage or
catch the other team up within the allotted match period of seventeen minutes.
It’s a format that produces an excellent match environment and very
entertaining volleyball for players and spectators alike and has produced a
different event winner each year.
Many thanks to all the teams who entered this year, our sponsors Torexe VC
and to the various volunteers who helped out during the day, Jenny Scott &
Chris Semmens to name a couple.
Yeovil – SW Vets Champions 2013
2013 Results:
- 1st Yeovil Better Late Than Never
- 2nd Wiltshire Mavericks
- 3rd City of Bristol 2
- 4th Plymouth Marjon Old Boys
- 5th City of Bristol 1

- 7th Yeovil
- 8th TooOld.com – Torexe
- 9th The Spring Chickens – Plymouth
- 10th Caldicot Crew

A good crowd stayed on to watch the tournament final and what an excellent
match to finish off the day with. Wiltshire Mavericks, Yeovil, Marjon Old Boys
and City of Bristol 2 had been the top four teams of the event. Wiltshire
knocked out City of Bristol 2 in the semi-final 25-22 and Yeovil took the
match against Marjon Old Boys 26-20 to set up the final between the two teams.
The two teams traded points throughout the match and it was not until the
last few minutes when Yeovil managed to open up a gap on the scoreboard and
kept it to the final hooter to collect this year’s title.
Wiltshire Mavericks – Second
Third place went to City of Bristol 2 who took the third – fourth play
off match 26-21 over Marjon Old Boys.
