Time for another SW News Update, don't forget the closing date for the
2013-14 league season and our level Two coaching course, please sign up ASAP, so
we can confirm the course.
Entry forms are now available for the 2013-14 SW Men’s and Ladies Leagues
Please also check out the rules for the new season, there are a few slight
changes and the introduction of Player of the Match nominations, please read
them through before entering.
The closing date for entries is July 12th. The draft fixtures will be out
hopefully around 9th August, from which point there will be a two week
ratification period. Once that period has completed, fixture dates cannot be
changed, so please make sure that you have someone available to confirm court
bookings and be available to coordinate with other teams during this period.
I look forward to receiving your entries, Cheers, Rachel Swindell Rachel.swindell@Network100.co.uk
Many have asked and been waiting for a Level 2 course in the region and we
have finally organised one. The course is already advertised on the VE web
site, so we need you to pass the word around as many may not be aware of the
procedure and need guidance and prompting. Encourage enthusiastic Level 1
coaches to take the Level 2 course and you/they will need to book online at: https://volleyballengland.org/courses
If we get little interest, then it will be simply cancelled, and it will
contradict the argument that has been spiralling in the South West about
desperately wanting/needing a Level 2 course.
The course has been advertised on the SWVA web site since after the
February SWVA committee meeting so it should be of no surprise; we had just
not confirmed a venue. I have found a venue in Taunton, hoping that it will be
quite central for many of you and I know it quite well myself.

Just a reminder that the Exmouth Beach Tournaments this year
are Sunday 7th July for the Beach Fours and Sunday 11th August for the Pairs.
All info can be found on the website: www.exmouthbeachvolleyball.com,
please forward to your club members, look forward to seeing you on the beach
very soon …
We have suffered from some major sand erosion this winter, however the
local council have been doing a bit of sand dune bashing for us and topping up
the beach volleyball area. This has given us an area for six to eight courts,
but with a mixed of sand quality.
The girls’ partnership started in 2010 when they played their first beach
volleyball tournament together. They went on to win the Jersey Beach
Volleyball Tournament for 2 consecutive years, 2010 and 2011. Apart from beach
volleyball both Ania and Dominika are regular players within the Jersey Indoor
Volleyball League representing the Island in various indoor volleyball
tournaments in Jersey, Guernsey and UK, as well as the Island Games in Åland
and the Isle of Wight.
Last year both girls participated in two UK tournaments as part of
Volleyball England Beach Tour (VEBT) and this year they are going to compete
in one of the Beach Summer Series tournament organised in June in Bournemouth.
Dominika and Ania are both members of the Jersey Volleyball Association and
are actively involved in promoting volleyball in Jersey.
The South West Volleyball Association appreciates the importance of
volunteers in our sport and the huge contribution they make.
The Annual Awards go a little way to recognise this years winners

- Doreen Dingle Award (Administration): Jim Gilbert
- Bert Williams Award (Referees): Charlie Huitson

Once again the South West entered this years Inter Regional Championship,
success for the Girls in the U16 event, no major trophies for the Boys this
year but an excellent event to end the year with. Many thanks to our three
sponsors this year who put in a total of £1,400 to help run both the Girls
& Boys program.

National Champions – Team Southwest U16 Girls
Congratulations to the South West U16 Girls Squad for winning this
year’s Inter Regional Competition held at the National Volleyball Centre,
Kettering. The squad was unbeaten during the two days of competition;
dropping only 3 sets on the way to overall victory. The girls received
many compliments throughout the weekend, they were technically the best
players and tactically the best squad.
A long first day of competition saw the South West in 1st place after
beating last year’s losing finalists London 2-0; East Midlands 2-0; East
2-1; and winning an exciting hard fought game against last year’s overall
winners South East 2-1. This gave the South West a guaranteed semi final
position.
A 2-1 victory against West Midlands in the last pool game on Sunday
morning kept the South West in first place. This set up a semi final game
against a London team who had improved over the competition after suffering
an early 2-0 defeat to the South West on Saturday morning.
The South West proved too strong for the London squad winning the game
2-0 and securing a place in the finals; the first time since 2010. The
second semi final was a closely fought match between the East and the
South-East (last year’s winners) with the East becoming eventual winners
2-1.
The final was played in front of a large and noisy crowd and didn’t
fail to deliver. The South West served and attacked with power and defended
with skill and agility to take the first set. The East responded well and
took an early lead in the second set. The South West battled hard and
eventually drew even and went on to win what could be described as an
awe-inspiring victory.

U17 Report
The first match was against the favorites and eventual winners, London.
They had England Cadets, England Juniors and the best players from the 2 teams
who contested the National U16 Final.
The boys started off strongly in the first set, matching London point for
point but their fire power and blocking saw them win the set. In the 2nd set
we lead at 14-13 but an unforced error let London back into the set and they
seized upon the opportunity. Intelligent serving saw off East Mids in the next
game.
Day 2 started with a very hard fought and very close match against East.
Failure to maintain the pressure when we were ahead, resulted in a 29-27,
26-24 loss, in what was probably the most thrilling match of the U17
competition. Subsequent narrow losses to Yorkshire and West Mids preceded a
comfortable win against South East.
As ever, the boys gained a great deal from the competition and it was
particularly invaluable for the less experienced players, who have not had
such exposure to the high standards of volleyball that they witnessed and
contributed to over the two days.

U15 Report
Results from the 1st days play
South West vs London 1:2
South West vs East Midlands 2:0
Results from the 2nd days play
South West vs East 0:2
South West vs South East 2:1
South West vs West Midlands 0:2
South West finished 4th in their group with 2 wins from 5, and were to play
East who came 1st in the pool.
Semi-Finals
South West vs East 0:2
London vs East Midlands 1:2
By the semi final stages, South West was playing the best volleyball of the
tournament. The first set was a tense affair and we narrowly lost the 1st set
by 25:23, having been in control until the last 3 points.
The 2nd set ran away from us, as a result of a few service runs by East’s
main setter, and East eventually made it a comfortable win.
3rd/4th play off
South West vs London 2:0
This was by far, South West peaking at the right time, ending the
tournament on a good note and taking a favorable bronze in this years
competition.
If you wish to considered for National League appointments please ensure

please ensure this is entered on your contact details along with any mileage
restrictions or maximum number of appointments.
This years Referee Conference will be at NVC Ketterig on Saturday 7th
September, an invitation from WTR will be sent out shortly.
Many thanks

Referee Commission.
If you are looking to run an out door tournament and are looking for a
suitable venue, you could try the National Trust.
As part of our on-going partnership with the National Trust a number of
Sport England colleagues attended an engagement session with them at one of
their outdoor properties. This project (and others within their market
development) is focused on widening access to sport. The discussion centred on
the need for NGBs and others to provide relevant products / experiences
responding to this model. When it comes to investment in NT properties or
outdoor sites, there are six geographical areas that will be an initial focus
and the NT should be viewed as another route to market or an opportunity to
land products and programmes. Regional NT managers are carrying out research
with users and developing some strong insight as a result which they are happy
to share. Key headlines from the insight include that people visiting NT sites
say ‘you can’t beat the outdoors’ and ‘keep it simple’. In addition,
people’s main motivations are about exercise, well-being and health which
sport can clearly help them to deliver.

CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Summer Fest
The 2013 South West Schools Beach Volleyball Championships and the
Sandbanks Beach Volleyball Festival (incorporating the British Junior
Championships) held from Friday 5th July to Sunday 7th July on Sandbanks
Beach in Poole, Dorset have been endorsed by the CEV as part of their
‘Youth Beach Volleyball Summer Festival’ initiative.
The aim of the Youth Beach Volleyball Summer Festival initiative is to
help the CEV pursue its goal of ensuring volleyball in all its forms is
accessible in every country across Europe regardless of gender or ability.
The CEV will provide support for the event by granting balls and nets that
the Sandbanks organisers plan to ensure are used not only for the event
itself but also through out the summer and across the South West region.
“The introduction of the Beach Volleyball Summer Festival does fulfil
our intention to expand our development projects with the long-term goal to
support the sport and get as many young people as possible introduced to
Beach Volleyball” CEV President André Meyer says. “We are starting this
ambitious project by supporting two youth festivals in the Netherlands and
England. Though they differ in their concept, they share the same ultimate
goal which is to make sure the young generations get to know Beach
Volleyball and especially get to feel the uniqueness of this sport that has
turned into one of the most successful and popular discipline included on
the Olympic program”.
Whilst entries for the South West Schools Beach Volleyball Championships
are restricted to schools within the region the British Junior Championships
entries are open to any interested junior beach volleyball players from
across the British Isles and the tournament organisers also hope that the
link with the CEV may also encourage entries from clubs and teams across
Europe.
Geoff Allen, Tournament Director said :
‘We are honoured that the CEV have endorsed the Sandbanks Beach Volleyball
Festival and our aim to provide as many youngsters as possible with the
opportunity to play beach volleyball. With 20 competitions from under 12’s
to under 20’s, including 8 for the British Championships, all young
volleyballers can find a competition that suits their age and standard.”
Entries for the competition which also include an adults mixed 4’s
competition can be found on the sandbanks website: http://www.wessexvolleyball.com/sandbanks.asp
We are looking to run a sitting volleyball awareness course as well as an
upgrade for any indoor referees who want to cross refer their qualification to
obtain a sitting grade in Plymouth this summer.
I am still in negotiation with VE about the dates but it will go ahead this
summer. If you would like to put your name on the list, please contact Andrew
