2014 SW Championships
Entry
forms are now available for the 2014 SW Championships,
once again the event will be held at the Kitto Centre in Plymouth over the
weekend of 17/18th May.
The closing date for entries is the 1st April, entries will be limited to
26 teams, so the tournament may close earlier than the deadline and as a
further incentive to get your entries in early. There will be a late entry fee
this year of an additional £20 (spaces permitting).
Sporting Entrance Scholarships at Swansea University
I am writing to let you know about Sporting Entrance Scholarships at
Swansea University (http://www.swan.ac.uk/scholarships/sports-scholarships/).
Scholarships of £1000 per annum (and renewable for three years) are granted
to students who reached a nationally recognised level of excellence.
The aforementioned scholarship could be given to a volleyball player who
represented his/her country at a national level. Therefore I was wondering if
you are aware of any volleyball players who represented Wales/England Youth
Teams and are thinking about doing undergraduate studies? If so, could you
please forward the information to them?
I would be particularly interested in finding out about female graduates as
our Women’s Team is performing well this season and I am hoping for building
another strong team next year.
Perhaps you could add this information to one of your newsletters? If so,
please let me know and I will re-write it into a more suitable format.
Thank you in advance for your help. I look forward to hearing from you!
Kind Regards,
Szymon Kubal
Cardiff Open Tournament
THE CARDIFF VOLLEYBALL OPEN TOURNAMENT
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY – SEPTEMBER 13th & 14th 2014
This tournament was held for a number of years but got cancelled due to
lack of entries…but we are hoping to resurrect the event. Those who have
already competed will know that the event is well run ( timeset games ) and is
the only facility in Wales that has 4 indoor courts on one site.
The format is the ‘usual’ 12 ladies team and 12 mens teams competing
over the weekend (2 pools of 6 teams on 2 courts per gender ). The faciilties
are first class, with the city of Cardiff offering a great welcome and a
thriving social life.
We are conscious of costs to teams and have tried to keep the fees to a
minimum, however, the hall hire fees dictate what we need to charge.
Entry for the event is £75 per team with an ‘early bird’ option of a £5
discount if entries are submitted before August.
Venue: Cardiff University – Tal Y Bont Sports Campus ( 9.30am – 6.00pm
each day).
This email is for information only as Cardiff Ladies Volleyball Club (
organisors ) are keen to let you know at the earliest opportunity so that you
can ‘dot it in your diary’ and wait for official entry forms etc. If you
require further info please get in touch – promos for the tournament will be
sent March/April.
I hope you will join us.

Second Referees Clinic
Andrew Potter (SWVA Officials Secretary) held a half hour clinic at the
Riverside LC in Exeter on Sunday. The focus was on the duties of the Second
Referee, it was well attended and everyone had the opportunity to put it
into practice during the EDVA Ladies Tournament that followed.

Volleyball Coaching courses in Cardiff
I am pleased to announce that I have been able to pencil in some dates at
Cardiff Metropolitan University for a Level 1 and Level 2 UKCC course. I
am in the process of confirming these details, however as you have expressed
an interest in attending the course/s I wanted to draw your attention to the
dates now so that you can schedule it into your diary and to share the dates
with other people in your clubs / regions that may also be interested.
UKCC 1 – 31st May, 1st, 7th and
8th June 2104
UKCC 2 – 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th
August 2014
As always, if we do not get the required minimum number of people on the
course then we will have to reschedule so I would be grateful if you could let
me know if there are any significant problems with these dates or if you would
like to try and attend.
I currently do not have the prices available but am gathering expressions
of interest so that I can confirm the details of the courses and their prices.
It may also give you time to apply for funding for this to reduce the costs to
you personally.
Once I have gauged interest then I will be able to forward on some more
information to you or to distribute through your own networks
Many thanks all, and best wishes

Upload before leaving the Sports Hall
Like many league programs, we required match results to be entered on line
and a copy of the scoresheet uploaded after each match. The number of portable
media devices (tablets and smart phones) now available on the team bench has
increased dramatically over the last couple of years. A third of all people now access the SWVA web site on a portable device (22%
tablet, 12% smart phone, all up from 5% two years ago), plus 3G & 4G
network coverage is now reaching more sports halls.
It’s now possible to upload your scoresheet before you leave the sports
hall, the ability to do pdf’s from a portable device is quite difficult,
therefore we have now enabled jpg photos of scoresheets. However do not crop
or adjust the image, as this activates image compression on portable devices
and will render the image UNREADABLE.
Upload your scoresheet before leaving the sportshall using a
portable device
- Take a photo with a tablet, smart phone or camera (min 5MB camera
required)
- DO NOT CROP or ADJUST the IMAGE (as this will compress the image)
- Check that you can read the scoresheet: Accepted / Not Accepted
- Go to scoresheet upload page www.SWVA.org.uk
- Fill in match details and upload.
Go to the Results Upload Page http://www.swva.volleyballmatches.co.uk/Login.asp
Match result all done.
Player Registration
In December we changed our player registration database, it’s a minimal
change for users however, the player registers page is no longer behind the
login page. Therefore anyone can register a player (or players can register
themselves) but you will need to be logged in to your club page to view your
player registration numbers / team sheet.

Sportbeat Festival of Music, Sport and Family Fun
The
SportBeat Festival is guaranteed to be an action-packed weekend; it’s an
event for all the family to enjoy. Oxstalls Sports Park is the venue,
previously used for the hugely popular Timeout Gloucester City Festival of
Volleyball, which ran for 24 years, the orgainisers for which have been
enlisted to help out at SportBeatFest. The Festival is an exciting concept
mixing music and sport, so whether you are happy to watch, listen, play or,
join in it’s your choice as there should be something for everyone to do.
The dates for your diary are 6th-8th June; it’s a great way to spend time
with friends and family and also your chance to play in the two day, 6-a-side
volleyball tourney. Sport plays a major part at the Festival, teams will
be competing to be crowned ‘SportBeatFest Champions 2014′ in Rugby 7s,
Netball and Volleyball. A tournament format will determine who makes it
through to the Finals on Sunday afternoon. Spectators are welcome to watch and
encourage all teams taking part in what promises to be an exciting weekend of
sport.
On the Music front we have a Main and Campfire Stage, this year we have
added an Academy Stage for up and coming local, young artists to perform on.
Last years acts included The Feeling, The Lightning Seeds, Juan Zelada, The
Vamps, Mark Morriss of the Bluetones, Ryan Keen, Young Kato and Mad Dog Mcrae.
Details of this year’s line-up will be released as and when acts have been
confirmed.
The Sportbeat Crew comprises of former Beach Volleyball players Jody
Gooding and Denise Johns who spent five years playing for Great Britain on the
World Tour and Jack Adams former GRFC, England Sevens player now with
Cinderford RFC. Between them the experiences gleaned from playing sport
around the globe has helped them to put on an amazing, friendly community
based Festival, the City is proud of.
They also have a great team behind them with over fifty years in the event
industry. The Sportbeat Festival is part of the BIG (Believe in
Gloucester) campaign and last year won the BIG ‘Community Event of the Year
Award’
