The new Plymouth Studio School has joined forces with Plymouth Mayflower Volleyball Club to launch a new Elite Volleyball Academy in Plymouth for junior players.

The Elite Volleyball Academy, which will be based at the Plymouth Studio School on the University of St Mark & St John site, will be modelled on seven other Volleyball Satellite Academies already in the UK. The new Academy will link to Volleyball England via Plymouth Mayflower Volleyball Club and reflects Volleyball England’s objectives to be at the forefront of elite junior development for the sport.

Andrew Potter of Plymouth Mayflower Volleyball Club, which has nurtured and trained its junior members to be England under 19 squads Indoor and Outdoor, Southwest Inter Regional U16 Girls champions & SW Under 12 boys Champions, comments, “This is fantastic news for Plymouth and the development of volleyball as a major sport – both indoor and beach volleyball.

“Working with Plymouth Studio School and using the world-class facilities on-site means we will be able to provide talented junior players with a combination of academic studies, professional coaching, strength and conditioning support, access to national and regional competitions and coaching qualifications.”

Sandbanks Beach Volleyball Festival

sandbanksHAPPY 21ST
Sandbanks Beach Volleyball Festival 4th & 5th July

This year the Sandbanks Beach Volleyball Festival will be celebrating its 21st year and will be including some additional competitions to compliment this fantastic event.

Once again Sandbanks will be part of the Junior VEBT (Volleyball England Beach Tour) with under 14’s, 16’s & 18’s competing for the title of British Junior Open Champions, and the Division 2 competitions for less experienced players. The under 12’s have their own Div 1 & 2 events. After last year’s amazing success we expect places will fill up quickly with returning teams.

The usual adult 4 a-side competitions will also take place and we are pleased to announce that this year an elite adult competition will run alongside the Sandbanks Festival, organised by Chris Gregory and Jake Sheaf, the GB Men’s No. 1 Beach Volleyball Pair, who have qualified for the European Games in Baku.

This year the organisers are also proud to announce an exclusive as we will also be hosting the UK’s first ever UK Beach Paravolley (Sitting) Competition.

This event is free for spectators to come along and support the UK’s finest young volleyball talent and experience world class volleyball from the fantastic elite players.

Grade 4 entry level indoor Referee Course in Plymouth – 11th July 2015

Volleyball England Grade 4 Volleyball Refereeing Course
Date: Saturday 11th July 2015
Time: 9.00am – 5.00pm
Venue: Plymstock school Sports Centre
Course Tutor: Richard Morten with Andrew Potter
Course Fee: £50

Grade 4 Referee Qualification
The Grade 4 referee qualification is an introduction into the world of indoor volleyball refereeing. The benefits of taking such a course are varied as it will not only allow you to referee games as a qualified and competent referee (therefore becoming eligible for paid refereeing opportunities in your region), but also will increase your knowledge and understanding of the rules as a participant.
Volunteers and Officials in sport are vital for volleyball to be enjoyed by all and I’m sure that if you attend, it can only improve your experience and understanding of the game and your contribution to your volleyball experience.

If you live in the Plymouth Area, there are opportunities for contributions to be made towards the cost of the course if you apply for an individual grant aid. I am sure there are similar options with other regional councils.
Included in the price upon passing the course, is referee registration with volleyball England for the 2015/16 season.

Course application
If you would like to enrol for this course please go to the Volleyball England website www.volleyballengland.org/courses

SW Annual Awards 2015

Quite a few nominations were received this year for the SW Awards, thank you to everyone how took the time to nominate a member of the SW volleyball community. Lots of people give up their free time to help others and the range of nominations each year reflects this. It’s a pity we can not present awards to everyone, for the 2014-15 season the SW award winners are as follows:

Bath Mavericks

Coaches Award – Matt Stevens (back right)

Matt is totally dedicated to the development of players of all abilities ranging from juniors to National league. His commitment to his coaching responsibilities is total.

He has progressed his ability as a coach by developing the Devizes team to be the dominant force in Wiltshire. This season Matt has exceeded expectations by coaching the Bath Mavericks National League Ladies team to a Play off place and entry in to NVL Division 1.

Nick Heckford

Bert Williams Referees Award – Nick Heckford

Nick has continued to give great commitment to refereeing for many years now. He refereed in the Women’s World Championships in 2014 in Italy, continues to travel onto the Continent regularly to referee European Cup club matches.

In addition to this :
– he still referees at all levels of National League
– runs a season’s opening refereeing development evening for local league players
– is a member of Referees Commission
– is a member of the Volleyball Dorset committee as Treasurer.

Doreen Dingle Award – Steffan Paessler

Steffen has given of his time freely over many years in order to produce a playing schedule, complete with timings and links to the result grids for the various categories in both the Junior Grand Prix and Junior South West Championships.

This has made it much easier for the administrator to run the tournament on the day, as they just have to set up the hall, give out the schedule and then the tournament tends to run itself using the information that Steffen provides. At the end of the tournament, the results are then sent to Steffen, who then checks and adds the results to the website, updating the various running totals as appropriate.

Steffen has always been generous with his time, prepared to make last minute changes when possible in a calm and understanding manner. I do not feel that Steffen really appreciates what a difference his organisation makes to the running of a tournament, it makes it so smooth in being able to run it and allows the organiser on the day to have confidence in being able to run it successfully.

I feel he is well overdue an official recognition of his outstanding contribution to the running of the Junior events over a significant number of years and how everyone involved really values his input. I have not hesitation in nominating him for the Doreen Dingle Administrators Award and feel he would make a really worthwhile recipient.

Commitment to SW Volleyball – Deryck Williams

I am not sure how long Deryck has been a member of the SW Executive Committee, however I don’t think there is anyone else (apart from Ron Richards) who has been on the committee for as long as Deryck. He initially joined the SW Committee as Gloucestershire VA Secretary and when he stepped down from that role (and became the Glos VA President) he then became a SW Executive Committee Member. He has made a huge contribution to local volleyball in Gloucestershire over many many years and also the SWVA.

EDVA League Program

edvalogo2.gif

The Exeter & District VA (EDVA) committee are currently going through the process of setting up the 2015/16 indoor league program. Teams come from all round Devon and West Somerset to take part in our events and the current league program has teams from Plymouth to Taunton.

The league format is generally two divisions, EDVA league matches are five sets long (two hours of volleyball) played on a home and away match basis with league points awarded for the win plus bonus points for each sets won.

There is always space for more teams to take part, so if your club or team is interested in joining the league program, please contact Dave Reece for more information. Entry forms will be available for collection at the 16th July (8:30 pm) EDVA committee meeting.

My IRC Experience – Toby Tapp

Following the Inter Regional Championships, we asked a couple of our representatives about their experience. This time we focus on Toby Tapp (SWVA no. 7)

Toby Tapp_web

It was good to play against people from my age group, as I am usually the youngest person in the local league. On the first day of the tournament we won our games against West Midlands, East and East Midlands. With a very long team meeting that night, delivered by our Coaches Jurek and Ben we went into the final day feeling good about ourselves.

Our first game on Monday was against the winners of this years tournament, South East. It was a very closely fought game with us just losing out in the final set. Then we played London, which were the favorites, having been completely destroyed by them losing in straight sets, we then had to play South East in the semi-final.

swu15_3350_web

The momentum swung our way in the first set giving us a 1-0 lead. We then lost our ways in the second set, making it 1-1. The final-set saw us having a match point at 14-13 however we were unable to finish the match off and it ended 18-16 to South East.

This then put us in the third-fourth play-offs against East. Although we previously beat them we had lost our touch and finished fourth out of six.

A short video from the U15 Boys Semi-final

The accommodation we stayed in was only a few minutes from the venue and with the restaurant a couple steps from the reception it was very convenient. We also had a squad of only 8 so I was only off for a total of 1 set maximum, which was very good for me. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience and hope to get into the under 17’s squad next year.

Toby.

 Club Matters

club matters

Sport England have launched the new Club Matters tools that will provide you with support, learning and guidance on all aspects of running your club whether it is large, small, formal or informal.

The Membership Team often receive enquires from clubs asking how we can help to generate more income. Club Matters has the power to assign an expert mentor from Price Water Cooper, who can provide face-to-face support and advice to change your club structure. For example it could change from a constituted club to a Charity Incorporated Organisation – what does this mean? Well, in short, your member fees become member donations, which could generate up to an extra £1,000 a year for your club!

 Meanwhile in Japan…

Referees are testing the new toys at the 2015 FIVB World League.

ref-cameraMr Phong Nguyen (on the picture with the camera) said that it was a TV camera just to give spectators another perspective. A bit heavy on one side, but only feeling when put on just at the beginning of the match. He also said that he hasn’t seen the final result yet.
