U17 Boys win Inter-Regional Championship

IMG_2636a_600In dramatic style the U17 Boys won the Inter-Regional Championship at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering as they beat London in the final match to tie the event but awarded the win overall because of winning the head-to-head match.

2017-U16 Girls-DSCN8096_600The U16 girls came third in their competition which was an excellent result due to their young age, a lot will be back for 2018 & 2019.

SW Vets 2017 Tournament

The SW Vets tournament is a handicap event for our older players where men and women compete against the clock, to either keep their handicap points advantage or to catch and overhaul the other team before the hooter sounds. Teams can be made up of any combination of players and the format throws up a different winner each year.

2017 Veterans Tournament Entries

Entries are now open for the 2017 SW Veterans Tournament on Sunday 29th October at Riverside Leisure Centre in Exeter. This year preference will be given to SWVA area teams that enter before 11th September 2017, after that date if there are any spare places they will be opened to teams outside the South West.

Please remember that the maximum number of teams for this event is 12 and they will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

My IRC Experience – Samantha Cory

Each year we ask a number of our youngsters to report back on their IRC experience, today we focus on Samantha Cory (SW No 18) from our U16 Girls Squad

“On the 27th and 28th May I was lucky enough to be selected to play volleyball in the England inter-regional championship competition. I was going to be playing as part of the u16 team, representing the South West. The competition was in Kettering, at the national volleyball center and I was to be playing the libero.

When I got there I was surprised at how big the hall was, the hall was split with the U14 on one side and the U16 on the other side. There were 2 matches going on either side and I was also amazed at the standard of the players there.  The players played tactfully as well as having big, powerful hits that skimmed the net.

sam cory libero

We had a total of six matches to play – three on Saturday, three on Sunday. We won four and narrowly lost two but we gave them a good game and they were only able to win on the third set by a few points. As a team, we came in 3rd position which I am very proud of as the competition were older than us and were very good.

I really enjoyed playing and watching the other matches as it was a good experience and a great way to learn. I feel much closer to my team and have developed good friendships. From the experience, I think I have improved and I now understand the game more.
I had not played libero many times before but I really enjoyed playing it as it is something different and it is a challenge.

I would like to thank my South West coach, Joanna, and the coaches and players of Torexe who have given their time to help me to improve.”

What is the South West Volleyball Association?

A question I was asked recently, I suspect there are many ways to answer this, my version below:

A group of volunteers (about 30) who come together from clubs and local organisations to add value to the sport greater than they can acheive in their own club or local area. Leagues, Tournament, Grand Prixs, Junior Events, Regional Set up for Refs, Coaches, Administrators, Presentations, Volleyball England and Sport England Representation.

We are basically a very large club and size brings advantages of scale: 1,800 plus volleyball players, 250 referees and officials, administrators, lots of coaches, 200 plus registered junior players, sponsors.

Our tools (available to anyone) includes the SWVA web site, Newsfeed, monthly newsletter sent to all members and access to other parts of the sport in England.

As the name suggests we are based in the SW of the UK with many members from South Wales, West Hampshire, the Channel Islands and further afield. If you would like to know more, got an idea or a project to improve the game or something to adding to the current volleyball program them please let us know and get involved. Happy to support all parts of the sport.
