Water Volleyball

With exactly three weeks before the start of the European Men’s Volleyball Championship in Ljubljana (September 12 to 26), the Slovenian capital hosted a unique spectacle – a volleyball match of former European volleyball stars on a floating volleyball field in the middle of the river Ljubljana.

In the immediate vicinity of Tromostovje, Fish Footbridge or Makalonca, ambassadors from all four host countries of the 2019 EuroVolley, Tomislav Šmuc and the Dutch Bas van de Goor, and former France and Belgium national teams, Guillaume Samica and Frank Depestele competed in the show.

The players were impressed with the attractive moves and proved that they can play volleyball on the water as well. With the prepared pitch and atmosphere created by many spectators, the volleyball players, who played three sets of up to 15, were also very pleased, changing teams every time, as the result was of secondary importance this time.

From indoors, sand and snow, Tomi Šmuc has now experienced what it is like to play on the water. “I have to say that I didn’t think it would be possible to play on the water, but in the end the game turned out to be very pleasing.

The event itself and its location are unforgettable and I’m really glad to be a part of it. I have to say that I haven’t played with Bass in a very long time. The fact that the boys can get together after so many years and contribute to the promotion of the European Championship is really something phenomenal, “said Šmuc after the game.

More information regarding EuroVolley can be found on the official website of the Championship, located at the URL https://eurovolley.cev.eu/en/moski/ .

SWVA Coach of the Year 2018-19

Back in May, Dave Gunter was awarded the 2018-19 SWVA coach of the year at the AGM, not present at the time, we can now confirm that the presentation shield has finally caught up with him.

The South West Volleyball Association appreciates the importance of volunteers in our sport and the huge contribution they make. The Annual Awards go a little way to recognise their contribution to assure the future development of volleyball.

Dave has given a tremendous commitment to coaching over the last few years with the South West VA, Wessex VC Juniors & Senior teams, VE Staff Tutor and Southampton Solent University.

Thank you to Roy for arranging.

Yvonne Perkins to step down as Chair of Volleyball Wales

Yvonne Perkins will be standing down as Chair of Volleyball Wales at the end of July, after a decade in post.

Yvonne stepped into the position at a very exciting time for Volleyball as the GB teams were preparing for their inclusion in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Volleyball Wales was created in April 2009 and completed the British jigsaw puzzle giving Wales a voice within the British Volleyball Federation, Small Countries Division in Europe, Confederations of European Volleyball and Federation of International Volleyball.

These ties were strengthened when Yvonne worked for LOCOG in London as the Group Admin Leader for Beach Volleyball in the Olympic Games, cementing firm friendships and links to many people within the Volleyball Community both in the UK and overseas. It was also with pride that several others from Wales were Gamesmakers at the Volleyball, Beach Volleyball and Sitting Volleyball events. With the motivation and inspiration that came from the Games, Volleyball within Wales was seeing an insurgence, especially at Junior Level.

Coaches Sandra Stoll and Jack Allman have been the biggest driver of junior volleyball within Wales enabling junior teams to compete internationally for both boys and girls, and it has been a huge delight to see their hard work pay off with some of the ‘original’ juniors competing on the senior scene for beach volleyball in recent years. Without their massive input, Volleyball Wales would not have been able to continue.

Closer to home, in 2014 Yvonne organised the Welsh League which has provided opportunities for players as well as providing opportunities for several new clubs to be developed in South Wales. It was hoped to replicate this in the North but this has not yet been achieved, although it is encouraging to see pockets of volleyball returning with some clubs utilising the coaching resources and training provided by Sandra over recent years.

As well as her role as Chair and League Secretary, Yvonne has also been the Treasurer and Secretary for Volleyball Wales for the past 8-9 years as these roles have not been filled since the previous post holders stepped down. Yvonne continued to cover these roles to enable the coaches to focus more on the coaching, and to develop the players needed for the future.

Birmingham 2022 (27 July to August 7)

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has announced that Birmingham 2022 is set to have the largest ever female and para sport programme in history after Women’s T20 Cricket, Beach Volleyball and Para Table Tennis were confirmed for the next Commonwealth Games.

This exciting announcement comes after the 71 Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) voted by the required majority to accept the proposal from Birmingham 2022 to add these three sports to the existing programme.

International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° said: “The FIVB is honoured that beach volleyball has once again been selected for the Commonwealth Games after its successful debut at Gold Coast 2018.”

“Volleyball is an inclusive sport that is enjoyed all over the commonwealth by people of all abilities and backgrounds. As a sports leader in gender equality, we are extremely proud to bring the fantastic atmosphere of beach volleyball to Birmingham 2022, an event which is set to have the biggest female and para sports programmes in history.”

Team England Beach players Victoria Palmer and Jess Grimson said: “We’re super excited about the inclusion of beach volleyball for Birmingham 2022. We had the opportunity to represent Team England at the Gold Coast in 2018, which was something we will never forget. But to have the opportunity to play at a home games would be the real dream and also a huge step forward for beach volleyball in England.”
